WORKS 1963 - 2017

November 17, 2017 - January 28, 2018

Born in 1938, Bernd Koberling is as much a preserver as innovator of the painterly possibilities of Modernism. Independent, and a great individualist among the post-war generation of his contemporaries, who range from Baselitz, Kiefer, Kirkeby, Lüpertz and Penck, Polke and Richter to Gotthard Graubner, his painting has always remained at the vanguard of its time.

Predicated on his conceptual Expressionism and the defiant “irreproducibility” of his own emotional world, he adheres formally to his lifelong themes in an ever-changing and evanescent world: The landscape as a symbol of human existence, which in colour and light, uncompromisingly and boldly, gently and in contemplative tranquillity demands to be rediscovered today.

Accompanying the exhibition is a richly illustrated catalogue, which, together with detailed essays, grant a comprehensive insight into the work of Bernd Koberling, from both a historical and contemporary perspective.
